curr.sbcc.net Web Site Software Requirement Specification
Revision: 1, Release Date: Draft
1. Introduction
This document defines the software requirements for the curr.sbcc.net web site at Santa Barbara City College. Rob Vance of SBCC IRD was the author.
1.1. Purpose
This web site will provide a repository for all approved course outlines for courses offered at SBCC. Dr. Jack Ullom initiated this project to allow access to course outlines via the SBCC Intranet in July of 2001.
1.2. Scope
The goal of the curr.sbcc.net web site, is to increase the availability of currently approved course outlines in order to improve the curriculum approval process. By using web based technologies the cost of printing and distributing documents should also be minimized. This site is the first step in a multi-part process improvement project.
1.3. Definitions, acronyms and abbreviations
FRC: Faculty Resource Center
intranet: a web site which is constructed for internal use within an organization
IRD: Information Resources Department
MS: Microsoft Corporation
OS: operating system
SBCC: Santa Barbara City College
1.4. References
None
1.5. Overview
The remainder of this specification is organized around the functional requirements of a intranet based document storage and retrieval application - namely, 1) repository 2) search and retrieval 3) maintenance and 4) technical data.
2. Overall description
2.1. Product perspective
The curr.sbcc.net site is independent of other SBCC sites or applications at this time. It is a peer to our www.sbcc.net site and to library.sbcc.net, etc, however its audience is internal to SBCC, not external to the college.
2.2. Product functions
The curr.sbcc.net site's primary function is as a repository of textual data concerning courses at SBCC. It will also have the appropriate navigation and search capabilities to locate specific course content for users. In general, the organization and display of the documents in the site should mirror the SBCC catalog.
2.3. User characteristics
Users of this web site will be SBCC faculty and staff members, especially those associated with the curriculum approval process.
2.4. Constraints
2.4.1 The site will be used by browsers of version 4 or greater of Microsoft Internet Explorer and of version 4 or greater of Netscape Communicator.
2.4.2 As constructed for this version the site will not provide for markup of existing course outlines nor for routing and/or approval of new documents.
2.4.3 Users will access the site using a variety of browsers and will use both Apple Macintosh and PC desktop computers, so cross platform compatibility testing will be required.
2.5. Assumptions and dependencies
None.
3. Specific requirements
3.1. External interfaces
The navigation bar will link to SBCC intranet and extranet sites.
3.2. Functions
3.2.1 Repository
The site will contain over 1200 course outline documents making up the entire catalog of regular course offerings at SBCC.
3.2.2 Navigation
HTML pages will be linked to provide a hierarchy from the top of the site, through departments down to course offerings. A navigation bar will allow the user to return home from any of the intermediate pages in the site.
3.2.3 Search
The site will contain a search engine. Specific implementation of this requirement is TBD at this time.
3.2.4 Maintenance
The SBCC Faculty Resource Center maintains the source documents (MS Word format course outlines) that comprise the bulk of the site. The FRC will add, change and delete pages on the site as changes to content occur after the initial release of the site. E-mail links will be provided for user comments.
3.3. Performance
A large volume of web pages are anticipated (> 1300), however, the number of concurrent users is not expected to be high (<10 maximum).
3.4. Database
None at this time, however, should a database be used by site functions it will be Oracle.
3.5. Design constraints
The site will be designed to meet requirements of accessible electronic and
information technology design. This requirement precludes the use of frames
or cascading style sheets, and demands the use of large, easy to read type with
high contrast between the background and the text.
3.6. System attributes
High availability/reliability requirements are not in effect, as this is not a transaction processing application.
3.7. Security
The site is secured by its location inside the college firewall. No further user, database or other security is contemplated.
