Course Objectives:
A supplementary problem-solving workshop designed for students in Math 137 and 138. The goals are to develop study habits and problem-solving skills. They are also intended to provide students with an "academic community" that will extend beyond the traditional classroom. The student will have an opportunity to develop peer and professional associations that will provide necessary academic and personal support. At the end of the course, student should be able to demonstrate the following:
1. Solve problems.
2. Demonstrate a comprehension of the essential ideas of algebra and trigonometry.
3. Work effectively with others.
Course Content and Scope: A supplementary problem-solving workshop
designed for Math 137 and Math 138. The
course content for this course is defined in the course of study outlines for
those courses.
Methods of Instruction: Students will work in small groups reviewing the more difficult homework problems, and solving the supplemental problem sets prepared by the workshop instructor. The instructor will be available to work with the small groups as needed. When necessary, as determined by the instructor, problems will be solved for the class as a whole by a student or by the instructor.
Required Assignments: During the workshop session, the student will complete more difficult problems in the course homework assignment, and will complete the supplemental problem set prepared by the workshop instructor.
Methods of Evaluation:
Evaluation Criteria: These skills will be demonstrated by the student's completion of 70% of the supplemental workshop problem sets, attendance, and participation in workshop discussions.
