Course Objective:   Demonstrate the ability to independently utilize available resources for success in a mathematics course.

 

Course Content and Scope:  

Mathematics learning skills:

1.          Note taking

2.          Textbook utilization

3.          Test preparation

4.          Test error analysis

5.          Utilizing mathematics tutorial software

6.          Extra focus on verbal skills, especially paraphrasing verbal expressions with algebra expressions and vice versa

7.          Analyzing decision making processes

8.          Using mathematics journals for self-diagnostics

 

Methods of Instruction:    Lecture/Discussion  is the primary activity to be used, along with student problem-solving. Students are expected to work outside of class on assigned exercises as well as on supplementary reading.

 

Required Assignments:   

1.              Students will be expected to practice techniques discussed during class time, read assigned materials, and complete homework assignments.

2.              Appropriate Assignments that Demonstrate Critical Thinking:  Students must demonstrate mathematical skills such as equation solving and graphing which involve analyzing information, recognizing concepts in new contexts, and drawing analogies.  Critical thinking will also be emphasized through numerous treatments of word problems.

 

Methods of Evaluation:   This course is designed as a companion course to Math 100, Elementary Algebra.  The evaluation will be Credit/No Credit, based on the satisfactory completion of the assignments of this portion of the course.
