Course Title:         Assistive Technology

56029.  Special Class Course Repeatability.

           Repetition of special classes is subject to the provisions of Sections 55761–63 and 58161 of this division. However, districts are authorized to permit additional repetitions of special classes to provide an accommodation to a student's educational limitations pursuant to state and federal nondiscrimination laws. Districts shall develop policies and procedures providing for repetition under the following circumstances:

           (a)    When continuing success of the student in other general and/or special classes is dependent on additional repetitions of a specific class;

           (b)    When additional repetitions of a specific special class are essential to completing a student's preparation for enrollment into other regular or special classes; or

           (c)    When the student has a student educational contract which involves a goal other than completion of the special class in question and repetition of the course will further the achievement of that goal.

Catalog Course Description:  A course designed for students with disabilities who are enrolled in mainstream college classes and whose disabilities result in educational limitations in the area of accessing technology.  Students experience a variety of assistive technology options;  develop skills in utilizing assistive technology; develop compensatory strategies for accessing technology; acquire skills to evaluate new assistive technologies as they become available;  identify their own current assistive technology solutions.

Description for Schedule of Classes:  A course designed for students with disabilities who are enrolled in mainstream college classes and whose disabilities result in educational limitations in the area of accessing technology. 

Lecture Hours:   Two hours each week = total of 36 hours.

Course Objectives:  The student will acquire the following skills and apply them to non-DSPS SBCC courses.

1.        Use assistive technology, independently and accurately.

2.        Explain in writing and verbally their own functional limitations in the area of technology as it relates directly to their disability.

3.        Evaluate and prioritize all assistive technology and strategies introduced in class that will accommodate their own disability.

4.        Choose which assistive technology and compensatory strategies will be of benefit to them in their education and employment.

5.        Utilize assistive technology and compensatory strategies in the mainstream.

6.        Outline a method for evaluating future assistive technology options.

 

Course Content and Scope:

1.        Presentation and utilization of state-of-the-art assistive technology such as voice recognition, text to voice, or large print options.

2.        Presentation and utilization of strategies to access technology such as screen organizers, color coded keys, or command reference sheets.

3.        Presentation and utilization of technology options as accommodations for disability such as electronic thesaurus in place of dictionary, graphic mapping options for brainstorming writing, or model word processing documents.

4.        Analysis of impact of various disabilities on accessing technology and analysis of assistive technology solutions.

5.        Presentation and utilization of resources to assist in analyzing future assistive technology options.

 

Method of Instruction:  The course will include lecture, large and small group discussion, individual instruction, use of trained tutors, colloquias, instructor designed modules.

 

Required Assignments:  There will be four assignments for this course:

1.        Development of an individual self-advocacy portfolio containing disability verification; articles or other information about disability; explanation of functional limitations in the area of assistive technology; accountability for requests for specific assistive technology or strategies to use as accommodations.

2.        Analytic review of one library article on the topic of assistive technology.  A copy of this article and the review will be included in portfolio and presented orally in class.

3.        Demonstration of assistive technology skills in non-DSPS SBCC courses.

4.        Development of a list of criteria for evaluation of future assistive technology.  This will be included in the portfolio.

 

Methods of Evaluation:  Methods of evaluation include class attendance and participation; quizzes; mid-term; final;  individual and group presentations;  completion of portfolio.

 

Texts and Supplies:  Instructor designed mastery learning workbooks.
