Course Objectives: By the end of the semester, the students will be able to:
1. Identify and recognize different kinds of silkscreen prints.
2. Identify and articulate the process-dependent aesthetics of silkscreen printmaking (serigraphy).
3. Originate compositions (sketches) for silkscreen prints.
4. Apply principles of composition and color in originating silkscreen prints.
5. Acquire skills to make silkscreen prints (cutting, painting, drawing, etc.).
6. Construct silkscreen frames.
7. Produce editions of silkscreen prints through photo-stencil, cut stencil, paper stencil, direct block-out and tousche-glue techniques.
8. Recognize hazardous materials, articulate their hazards and skillfully handle them.
9. Discuss, critique and evaluate their prints and those of student peers.
10. Recognize and analyze master prints.
11. Compare and contrast traditional and contemporary concepts of expression.
Course Content and Scope
1. Brief introduction to the history and aesthetics of printmaking with emphasis on serigraphy and silkscreen processes.
2. Construction of a silkscreen frame for printing.
3. Use of various stencil methods including photo, cut film, paper, direct block-out, and tousche-glue out techniques.
Methods of Instruction: There will be demonstrations, lectures, slide lectures, discussions, laboratory (practical application of techniques), individual and group critiques. There will be gallery and museum visits, films and visual aids.
Required Assignments
1. A small edition of prints of each technique assigned.
2. A portfolio of all assigned work presented to the instructor for critique at the end of the semester.
3. Preparation of at least one print for exhibition.

1. Classroom attendance 10%
2. Oral and written critiques 10%
3. Assignments completed 20%
4. Final portfolio 60%
Appropriate Texts and Supplies
No text is required. The Complete Printmaker by Ross and Romano, 1990 and additional books and periodicals are available in the classroom for reference.
